In this week's class, we learned sketching on different coloured medium. The subject was chosen so the grey paper would aid in shading techniques. A couple of practice runs on white paper before moving onto the grey and overall it turned out okay. I'm getting more comfortable with the shading process and learning how the different charcoals provide different results. The pencils have pretty much been put away and the intire effort is being done with willow charcoal (and white conte for the highlights).

WTF, a blog?
I decided that I wanted to start a blog for a couple of reasons: first, I thought it was a good way for me to keep a history of my new adventures, and second, someone else might actually find this interesting! Really!
There are a several aspects to my getting healthy and enjoying this planet. I think one or two of them might be interesting to share. I’ve started hiking, and as I hike, I want to track my progress. I’m taking pictures of the magnificent places I go to and I also capture my “tracks” on a GPS and load the files into Google Earth so I will have a record of my journeys. My goal is to eventually walk the entire Bruce Trail… all the way from Queenston up to Tobemory (892km). It might take a few years by the time I get through it all, but this blog will be a history of my travels.
I’ve also started taking art courses at the Burlington Art Centre (Never been? Go, it’s fantastic!). I’m starting with sketching and eventually I will move into painting. I might even have a go at sculpting. It’s really been 30 years since I’ve done any meaningful artwork and it was always my plan to take it up when I retired. I decided there was no need to wait, so I signed up for courses and now I’m glad I did. The time when I am in that classroom is so incredible - I can just shut out everything else and immerse myself in my art. It’s like mindfulness on crack; now I know how the Buddhist monks do it!
I’ll be posting my first hiking adventure shortly as well as some of my first sketches. Stay tuned!
